Health Minister appoints new NIMDTA chair

Mr Alistair Joynes has been appointed chair of the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Special Health and Social Care Agency (NIMDTA).


Health Minister, Mr Edwin Poots, announced the appointment, which will run over a two-year period effective from 20 June 2011.

Mr Joynes MCIPD lives in Portadown and is the managing partner of a business and HR consultancy, and has been an arbitrator with the Labour Relations Agency since 2001.

He holds no other public appointments and has not engaged in any political activity in the last five years.

The Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Agency is responsible for funding, managing and supporting postgraduate medical and dental education within the Northern Ireland Deanery. It provides a wide range of functions in the organisation, development and quality assurance of postgraduate medical and dental education, and in the delivery and quality assurance of continuing professional development for general, medical and dental practitioners.

To reflect the different training pathways the Agency is divided into three functional departments for the provision of training in dentistry, general practice and the hospital specialties/public health medicine.

The chair of the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Special Health and Social Care Agency receives annual remuneration of £13,687.

The appointment was made with the approval of the Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety. There are no specific qualifications for appointment.
